Riding the Wild Elephant is a story that incorporates the thrill of discovery, the exhilaration and energy of the research lab and sometimes the crossing of personal boundaries that result from this interaction. Both research scientists, Jake and Emma play a part in that struggle. Riding the Wild Elephant, told in four books, covers a span of years and follows the experiences of three families: The dysfunctional, and on the edge of financial ruin, Moshe and Ruth Ginsberg and their three children who struggle to survive in the small town of Calvary on the North Texas Plains; Tom and April Carlisle, proud and deeply rooted in their religion, from a coal mining town, Sally's Mound, in West Virginia; and finally the family of Jake and Meryl Carlisle from Falls Church, Virginia. Although happily married and the father of four, Jake is nonetheless fascinated by the brilliant, abrasive Emma whom he is determined to understand. His decision sets them on a course with disastrous consequences.
